Aishwarya Rai effect: Not old or posh to push for natural delivery

MUMBAI: When actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby on Wednesday, she made a powerful statement: One is never too posh to push or too old for a natural delivery. The 38-year-old former Miss World won accolades from various city's doctors for her "feat" at a time when every fourth woman in Mumbai undergoes a Caesarean section delivery instead of a natural one. Among women who are over 35 years of age, this statistic gets more skewed: one survey said 60% of them opted for a surgical delivery.

"Sometimes, an older mother is not given a choice by the doctor on whether she would like to deliver normally. It is taken for granted that older women should have Caesarean deliveries," said Dr Nozer Sheriar, president of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society. But he felt this could change, thanks to Aishwarya. "Now mothers-to-be will be aware of what they can and should do," he said.

Dr Kiran Coelho, who heads Lilavati's gynaecology department, felt the actor should be held up as a role model for all moms-to-be. "With adequate ante-natal preparation and motivation, most women irrespective of their age can deliver their babies naturally."

"It's a bold step on the part of two bold women," said Dr Firuza Parikh of Jaslok, adding that Dr Vinita Salvi of Seven Hills Hospital is among those excellent obstetricians who can ensure a normal delivery in most cases.

It's a generalization that has become the buzzword in medical circles: Too posh to push. Studies have shown that today's woman with her low threshold for pain is more likely than her mother to opt for a C-section.

Statistics from BMC's public health department bears out the popularity of the C-section in the private sector which the middle and upper middle classes prefer. In 2010, for instance, a little more than 1.83 lakh children were born in various public and private hospitals. Almost 17% of these births were via C-section; almost 69% were delivered in private sector hospitals and nursing homes.

In this rash of C-section deliveries, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's natural delivery could be a trend-setter. As both the Bachchan family as well as Seven Hills Hospital have not given out specific details of the birth, it is not known whether the actor opted for an epidural (a spinal shot of painkillers) during delivery. In fact, a former supermodel who is scheduled to deliver in the next few months, too, has told her doctor that she wants a natural delivery.

Holy Family Hospital's Dr Nozer Sheriar pointed out that not all women over the age of 40 years go for the C-section. "But C-sections are more common in this age group (60-65%) mainly because the women do end up having complications with late deliveries," said Dr Sheriar.

Dr Duru Shah, who consults at Breach Candy Hospital, said that many women who opt to have children later in life have problem conceiving. "They take fertility treatment or opt for assisted reproductive processes to get pregnant. Such pregnancies are precious both from the point of view of the doctor as well as the patient. It is hence possible that many doctors advise such patients to undergo a C-section," she said.

But a doctor working in the public sector believes the soaring rate of C-sections denote an unethical trend. "The Caesarean surgery rate in India's urban areas is approximately 50% and is estimated to be as high as 80% or more in some private hospitals," the doctor said.

C-section, said Dr Sudeshna Ray, is not a function of the woman's age or her preference. Dr Rekha Daver, who heads JJ Hospital's gynaecology department, concurs: "If everything is fine during the pregnancy, then there is no reason why a mother shouldn't opt for a natural delivery-no matter what the age."

Dr Daver added that a decision to opt for a C-section can be taken only after considering the weight and maturity of the child and the mother's blood pressure and vaginal dilation.

A natural delivery has benefits for the child as well. Dr Ray said: "A child who goes through the labour process has better immunity, his\her gut is better colonized with beneficial bacteria and his\her lung mature better."

Burberry: Killer Heels

The scene outside the Burberry Prorsum show was perfect if you want to give the impression of media and celebrity frenzy — and you’re live streaming the whole thing on the Web. A crowd of people was held behind a police barricade on the opposite sidewalk, and guests waved their plastic entrance cards and then entered the darkened show space mobbed with people. More than once I found myself turning to apologize to someone’s giant handbag.

It was kind of fun, as these things go. The front row was loaded with Burberry-wearing celebrities — Cat Deeley, the socialite Poppy Delevigne, Alexa Chung, Sarah Jessica Parker, Serena Williams and Andy Murray. I had no idea who the young guys were at the end of the row, but they wouldn’t look out of a place in a Burberry ad.

The motorcycle leathers and trench coats with quilted leather sleeves told a pretty straightforward story, but this was not Christopher Bailey’s best collection. Indeed, the many leather jackets and coats — plain, studded and in gold snakeskin with stretch pants and skimpy dresses — seemed primed for Web sales; much of the collection was to be offered for immediate sale and delivered in about two months. Hence a style that was seasonless rather than overtly spring.

I also kept thinking that the collection lacked feeling — unless you count the pain of the models who cast off their raunchy heels on the runway. The last model toppled over a few yards from the backstage area and had to scramble back up. When I think of all the great collections that Mr. Bailey has done for Burberry, they’ve all been characterized by a sense of emotion that he was willing to put out there. It wasn’t all crass e-commerce.

Is TV's Dog the Bounty Hunter's Duane Chapman a racist?

Duane Chapman, aka Dog The Bounty Hunter may be a fungus ball, but I don't anticipate he is a racist. He is alone addition that is apparent to some of the algae of our planet. In his band of work, Dog needs to act, say and do things to accomplish bodies accept he is austere you can't acquaint he is by his looks so he charge resort to added methods (yes that is a beating on the antic attending he maintains, but this isn't the abode for that.) Using aspersing language, whether the accent is racist or not, is how he gets the absorption of his subject.

I accept to ultimately say yes Dog is a racist or no Dog is not a racist, one would charge to ascertain what qualifies as a actuality as a racist. If it is addition that uses aspersing ancestral slurs, again there is a ample majority of the citizenry that is racist, and it goes both ways. I do not accept addition is a racist because they use a ancestral slur, alike if it is in antipathy of addition person. They may be mean, disrespectful, ignorant, and a accomplished account of added things, conceivably alike a racist; but I do not accept you can alarm addition a racist alone because they use ancestral slurs. Attending at abounding accepted songs or Rap songs from the 80s and 90s. There are ancestral slurs acclimated with a bifold accepted and generally not in a abhorrent way. My analogue of a racist is addition that dislikes addition person, alone based on their race.

Statistically, Dog deals with added minorities, so the slurs he uses may be ancestral slurs; but if you looked into his claimed life, I don't anticipate you would acquisition annihilation to abutment him actuality a racist (at atomic according to my analogue above.) He is a bedraggled hillbilly that doesn't consistently accomplish the best decisions, but he is no racist.

What's added is that you charge bethink that he is on a absoluteness television show. The affair abounding bodies don't accede back they watch shows like these, is that the bodies on the appearance are at the benevolence of the admiral and editors. If I accept abundant footage of someone, for archetype filming someone's activity for abounding hours every day, I could apparently accomplish them attending like annihilation I capital to. Ratings are down, let's activity up some controversy.' Again they booty some ambiguous agreeable and accomplish a appearance of that. There could be footage of him visiting some accompany that are a minority, bistro at a cookout with the families blind out, but instead they adjudge to appearance him block some accurately arch bond alembic on the run area Dog calls him a aspersing name, to activity up some account letters to accompany in the ratings. I am not adage that is what happens, but it is article one charge accede back watching absoluteness television.

Just in account a affair like this, you apparently already accept your apperception fabricated up. All I ask is for you try to booty a footfall out and attending at this from what ability be a altered point of view. Was he walking about adage 'I abhorrence all minorities' or affectation in a KKK robe? No! So, how can bodies be so quick to adjudicator and alarm Dog a racist? I assumption they are all perfect.

Deciding if the Beatles absolutely were "bigger than Jesus"

My mother was built-in into a carefully religious family, which is not that aberrant considerring it was Boston in the aboriginal 1940's, a awful religious burghal still to this day. It was a time that I, and others in my mid-twenties bracket, cannot imagine. Masses said in Latin, bodies wore their best apparel and dresses, the aliment and wine were absolutely Jesus Christ, the Pope was as able as his name declared him to be, there was no ability of the priests messing with any kids. In added words, it was a purer and added able time for the church.

Then, lo and behold, the 1960's appear on by and accord the kids, who didn't alike appetite to try to apprentice latin, some ammunition to action aback in boyish angst...Rock n' Roll. Bedrock advance faster than Christianity through a 3rd apple country (almost like the crusades of the 11th century, if you will). John Lennon and his aggregation were the figureheads of the accumulation media bedrock n' cycle movement and John knew it. He grew up aloof like my mother did, but England was alike added frought with religious affray than America. The Beatles had become bigger account than the Protestants and Christians alarming anniversary added up in his citizenry or the Israelis demography aback their acreage or Iraq architecture their own religious state. Given John's history of political involvement, he apparently begin this to be absurd. I'm abiding he admired his music as abundant as any fan, but he apparently acquainted there were added good things in the apple to allocution about.

I don't anticipate John was refering to Jesus or his bandage in accurate terms, but instead metaphorically as institutions apery the old clashing with the new. The parents with the teenagers. Change is a actual able affair and can rip afar those who go with it from those who action it. And change was happenning everywhere. The funniest affair is that both the Beatles and Jesus are angry for all they can to abide in the accessible eyes these days. John Lennon's asleep and Paul McCartney aloof becomes added antic everyday. I don't alike accept what bodies accept done to their religious representatives, warping them to fit their political agenda...be it Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham or Vishnu.

So, afterwards account this, try to anticipate absolute hard, what's bigger than both the Beatles and Jesus these days? American Idol? Oil? Your T.V.?

Great gifts for 10-year-old girls

Ten year-old girls fall into the "tween" age group that can be a challenging group to buy for. As an active carpool Mom, I've had an inside ear this year into what 10 year old girls think is hot and what is not. Here's a look at gifts some of these young ladies got for their birthdays this year and loved, as well as what gifts are at the top of their Christmas wish lists.

Gift Ideas for 10 Year-Old Girls: Lava Lamps

Tween girls love lava lamps and this has been a popular birthday gift this year that is also showing up on Christmas wish lists. They're easy to find for around $15.00 and commonly come in pink, blue or purple. Here's the thing though: Tween girls seem to think that lava lamps are a hot new idea. Let's just not tell them that we had them too. They may quickly become uncool.

Tweens with iPods are very clear-they want iTunes gift certificates so that they can download all of their favorite music. Ten-year-old girls say you don't even have to know what an iPod or iTunes is, that these iTunes gift cards are for sale in a variety of denominations from $5.00 to $50.00 right at the grocery store in the gift card section.

Gift Ideas for 10 Year-Old Girls: Beauty Products

Tween girls are doing more spend-the-nights and gym and camp activities. Bathrobes are a hot commodity for this age group. They prefer sporty and practical to frilly or fluffy.

Gift Ideas for 10 Year-Old Girls: Magazine Subscriptions

The tween girls riding in my car are eating up magazines. They love getting their own mail and reading their own magazines cover to cover with friends. Popular magazine titles include "American Girl." 'National Geographic Kids" and "Young Rider."

Gift Ideas for 10 Year-Old Girls: Kitchen Gadgets & Accessories

These young ladies are no longer "playing kitchen." They are really creating their own meals, helping to prepare family meals and trying out new recipes. Tween girls enjoy having "their own" stuff in the kitchen including aprons, recipe books, cool measuring cups and gadgets from graters, ice-cream scoops and pizza cutters.

not have cell phones or cell phones with cameras. These girls love taking their own pictures of people, places and pets!

Gift Ideas for 10 Year-Old Girls: Digital Photo Frame

These busy girls are not into scrap booking right now. They are techno savvy and they love the idea of having a digital photo frame that rotates and shows off all of their favorite photos that they choose display. The digital photo frame is called "the bomb" gift idea by teens.

Gift Ideas for 10 Year-Old Girls: Handmade Gift Items

While not all seven year olds really appreciate hand crocheted scarves, tween girls really do seem to appreciate handmade items from funky stocking caps, to colorful scarves, to unusual knitted backpacks, and of course, hand beaded jewelry.
